What you need to know about the NBTs?

The National Benchmark Tests (NBTs) play a key role in admission and placement into university courses in South Africa.

Many university courses require you to write the NBTs—some need only the AQL exam, while others require both AQL and MAT. Check the entry requirements of your chosen courses to see if the NBTs are necessary and which sections you need to write.

📌 Two Sections:

  • AQL (Academic & Quantitative Literacy): Tests reading comprehension, language skills, and quantitative problem-solving.
  • MAT (Mathematics): Assesses mathematical and logical concepts—without a calculator.

📌 Exam Format:

  • Both AQL and MAT are written on the same day, each lasting 3 hours.
  • No calculators allowed.

📌 Registration & Test Dates:

  • Registration opens: 1 April 2025 at nbt.ac.za
